LEGISLATIVE REPRESENTATIVE

The Pension Rights Center, the country’s only consumer organization dedicated solely to protecting and promoting retirement income security, is seeking a Legislative Representative. 

The Legislative Representative tracks federal legislation regulation affecting pensions and retirement savings, lobbies Congress and federal agencies on pending legislation and regulations, and works with allied organizations to build support for the Center’s policy agenda. The Legislative Representative reports to the Center’s Executive Vice President and Policy Director, and also works closely with other members of the Center’s senior management team, including the Center’s Director and the Director of the National Pension Assistance Resource Center.

Activities and Responsibilities  
Specific activities and responsibilities include:

  • Tracking relevant retirement income and appropriations legislation in Congress;
  • Working with the Center’s legal and policy staff to evaluate retirement security legislation and proposals;
  • Meeting with members of Congress and their staff on retirement income and appropriations measures;
  • Monitoring regulations and meeting with federal agency staff on retirement measures.
  • Responding to inquiries from congressional offices regarding pending and proposed legislation relating to pensions and retirement savings plans;
  • Drafting testimony, letters, comments and memoranda on pending legislation;
  • Meeting with allied organizations to build support for the Center’s legislative agenda;
  • Working with the Center’s Legislative Counsel and Communications Director to prepare summaries of legislation, regulations and court cases for the Center’s websites and e-newsletters, and writing fact sheets, legislative updates, and other publications;
  • Responding when appropriate to media inquiries; and
  • Serving, as needed, as a Center spokesperson at conferences and meetings.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Five years experience working for a congressional office or committee is strongly preferred;
  • A law degree and working knowledge of pension law preferred.
  • An understanding of legislative strategy and procedure;
  • Experience working in public interest coalitions;
  • An ability to work collaboratively;
  • A willingness to engage proactively with members of Congress, congressional staff, and federal agency officials;
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complicated legislative and regulatory issues;
  • Ability to produce high quality work under pressure and consistently meet deadlines; and
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
